Living in Chicago has helped me appreciate that one can never really know and understand a foreign culture from a visitor’s perspective. Because no matter how long one lives in another country, one always remains, on some level, a tourist. The travel industry reinforces this, relying as it does on stereotypes and clichés and popularity and the paths of least resistance. I am interested in visualizing that which is authentic about a place or cultural experience. I looked to Hong Kong, where it is easy for me to subvert the superficial and the typical because I am a native. My motivation as a designer is to enable my audience to vicariously experience, from an insider’s perspective, the place I call home.
